Hey, Mamas! Registration for the 2011 Boston Marathon is now open. Will you be there?
If you plan to run it, you need to register soon. The event is capped at 26,800 runners. That’s more than the population of the town I grew up in, but last year the race filled just two months after registration opened. This year it’s expected to fill up even faster.
The price tag for entry is $130. In addition to meeting basic age and gender requirements, you have to pass a qualifying standard at an approved marathon on or after September 20.
I will, in all likelihood, be waving from the sidelines with my kids. It’ll be a great day in my personal history if I ever get it together to run a 5K, let alone a marathon, let along THIS marathon with its infamous Heartbreak Hill.
But it’s a great outing with little kids. They love seeing the runners, and the crowds and the fanfare. It’s like a parade. Only instead of celebrating clowns and costumes, they’re celebrating people at the peak of their physical fitness, using their bodies.
I’m not much of a runner, but having taken it up as a hobby, I’ll enjoy watching this year’s marathon more than ever.
Will you be there, either running or on the sidelines?
