Rich or Rehab: Lloyd Dobler's Nephew

sayanythingposterWhen most people think about the movie “Say Anything…,” they think about John Cusack, a boombox and Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” Then they think about Lili Taylor singing “Joe Lies.” Then maybe they think about John Cusack, on a payphone in the pouring rain, proclaiming, “I gave her my heart. And she gave me a pen.”

But eventually, after they’ve covered all those things, they will eventually recall that Cusack’s character — the iconic, perpetually romantic kickboxer Lloyd Dobler — had a nephew. You remember this kid. He also did a little kickboxing. He had a mullet. His mom was played by Joan Cusack. And when Lloyd asked, “Hey, my brother. Can I borrow a copy of your ‘Hey Soul Classics’?,” the kid responded: “No, my brother. You have to go buy your own.”

Turns out little Jason Dobler was played by an actor named Glenn Walker Harris, Jr. And since 2009 marks the 20th (!) anniversay of “Say Anything…,” this seems like as good a time as any to find out what happened to him.

Truth be told, there isn’t a heck of a lot of information about Harris on the ‘ol Internet. His imdb resume tells us that he definitely continued acting post-“Say Anything…,” and probably appeared in a TV show or movie that you saw without realizing he was the same kid who hit the punching bag with Lloyd D.  His credits include roles in the movies “Wild at Heart” and “North,” and on TV shows like “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “E.R.,” “Commander in Chief.” Most notably, he played Sly Eckert on “General Hospital” for a few years in the 1990s.

Again, according to imdb — pretty much the only reliable source I could find for Harris info — he eventually went to film school at USC. These days, it appears he’s working more actively behind the camera. He directed a short film last year called “Passing Afternoon.” And apparently the 26-year-old worked as a production assistant on one of this season’s more anticipated releases, James Cameron’s “Avatar.”

Not a bad career trajectory for a kid who can call Lloyd Dobler his uncle. Have you got more intel on what Harris is up to these days? By all means, feel free to share in the comments.
