Rick Santorum Cancels More Appearances to Be with His Hospitalized Daughter

Rick Santorum and Family

Rick Santorum put family first this weekend. The Republican presidential hopeful was to appear at a slew of events in Florida on Sunday , but canceled so he could spend time with his 3 ½-year-old daughter Bella who is currently hospitalized.

“Rick and his wife Karen are admitting their daughter Bella to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia this evening,” his spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement via Huffington Post, he added,”Rick intends to return to Florida and resume the campaign schedule as soon as is possible.”

Initially, Rick only actually cancelled his events in the morning … (an appearance on Meet the Press and a church appearance in Miami) but did not cancel his appearances scheduled for later in the day in Sarasota and Punta Gorda. Then on Sunday morning Santorum also cancelled his afternoon line up, but his wife and five older children will be hosting the events instead.

Santorum’s daughter (the youngest of his seven children), has Trisomy 18, which is a genetic condition where there is an extra chromosome (or part of a chromosome).

Of his daughter, Santorum told Christian conservatives in Iowa, “I have a little girl who’s 3 ½ years old.” He added, “I don’t know whether her life is going to be measured — it’s always been measured — in days and weeks. Yet here I am. … because I feel like I wouldn’t be a good dad if I wasn’t out here fighting for a country that would see the dignity in her and every other child.”

For the sake of his daughter, let’s hope he can find a good balance between family and the fight for the nomination for his daughter’s sake.
