Safeway Drops Charges Against Pregnant Mom for $5 Sandwiches

Safeway drops charges against a family who forgot to pay for $5 sandwiches.

Well, the arrest of the accidental shoplifting pregnant mother certainly had everyone riled up — many saying they were boycotting the supermarket, while some say she deserved the punishment for being a thief!

Safeway has decided to drop the charges of fourth-degree theft and petty misdismeanor against Marcin and Nicole Leszczynski, the couple who forgot to pay for $5 in chicken salad sandwiches while grocery shopping last week. Their 2-year-old daughter Zofia was taken by Child Services, separating the family for 18 hours.

A Safeway division president called the family yesterday and apologized for what they’d been through. Representatives for the supermarket chain claim the store manager was following shoplifting protocol and had no idea the child would be taken from the family. Safeway does plan to re-examine how managers and employees are trained and admitted that the Leszczynskis’ case was mishandled. The couple was encouraged by their lawyer to take their story to the media, and the uproar has definitely paid off.

Sure, charges are dropped but that won’t take away the trauma felt by the family that horrific night last week. They had hired a criminal defense lawyer to fight the previous charges and — as of yesterday — were unsure if they would choose to pursue legal action against Safeway.

Uh, I have a feeling they will …
