School FAIL: Cartwheels are Now Banned in School

Note to self: Must stay upright

There’s no shortage of madness happening in schools today. Like, spanking is OK but hugs are not. As Babble’s Joslyn Gray posted earlier this month, it’s time to stop the insanity with all of these arbitrary and Big Brother-ish limitations on what students can eat, do, wear and say.

Sadly but not surprisingly, there’s now a new no-no to add to the NO list now that school is back in session:

As Freerange Kids reports (via the Local West Courier), the Drummoyne public grammar school in Sydney, Australia, has instructed kids to “stay upright their whole day, as head- and handstands are no longer allowed unless ‘under the supervision of a trained gymnastics teachers and with correct equipment.'”

One student said they were told they generally can’t do anything “upside down.”

This comes after the school re-surfaced their playground to make it softer and safer.

The school’s principal is concerned about injuries and liabilities (no doubt more the latter than the former), which lead to the ban on physical activity.

While it’s always nice when folks look out for the safety of our children, there does come a time and a limit on how much we can protect them, and from what. When we say they can’t do a flippin’ cartwheel it might be time to reassess how much protection they really need — not to mention what we’re really protecting them from, and driving them to do when we’re banning all of their fun.

Because when we tell them they can’t run and jump around, it leaves them to do— what? — drink whole milk while standing side-by-side and not touching?

Gee, childhood sounds more and more fun every day, no?
