Tina Stewart, a Middle Tennessee State University basketball player, was stabbed to death last night at her apartment near campus. The prime suspect, Shanterrica Madden, has been charged with murder in the first degree. Madden is an 18-year-old freshman at MTSU. It’s believed that Madden stabbed Stewart in the midst of an argument.
Stewart suffered “multiple traumatic wounds,” according to police. Local CBS affiliate WCBS reports that Stewart and Madden were roommates, both originally from Memphis. A vigil will be held tonight in honor of Stewart at 6 pm at the Murphy Center on campus. The MTSU Lady Raiders basketball team was scheduled to leave tomorrow for this weekend’s Sun Belt Conference tournament, but coach Rick Insell says, “This is a coach’s nightmare. My only concern right now is with Tina, her family and her teammates,” the blog MTSU Sidelines reports.
Tensions continue to run high in Murfreesboro, as police shot a burglary suspect near the campus this morning in response to reports of gunfire. MTSU students were alerted via email about the situation. According to local news channel SKY5, “Kyle Evans, spokesperson with the Murfreesboro Police Department, said it was unclear if police had injured the suspect.”
Our condolences to the MTSU campus and the Stewart family.
