Should We Look to Room Decor for Unique Baby Names?

mariah carey, baby names

Baby naming is hard ... but not that hard.

Who doesn’t love interior design? An expression of self in the form of throw pillows and wall hangings, bare walls and sofas with clean lines.

A well-placed lamp, an eclectic collection of bud vases — those aren’t just the makings of a pretty room, they’re an extension of oneself.

Much like babies.

Which must be why Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon named one of their twins after a favorite room in the house.

The pop singer gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, last weekend. The girl, Monroe, is named after the great icon, Marilyn Monroe (and who Mariah Carey credits with inspiring her). It’s cute. Cute name!

The boy, though? His name is Morrocan. At first blush, it sounds like an awkward attempt to bend the city name trend (Sydney, Brooklyn, and — streeetch! — Bronx) into a nation-slash-nationality fad. Though then you’d ask, “Mariah Carey’s from Morocco?”

Well, no. She’s not and it’s not a shout-out to folks in Marrakesh. Rather, it’s the style of decor in her and Nick’s favorite room in their New York City apartment. The boy is named after the Morrocan Room, so named because of all the gold-threaded fabrics and fluffy pillows.

It’s the room where Nick apparently proposed to Mariah, but come on, that’s not excuse. What if he would have asked for her hand in the bedroom? The den? Would we now be discussing her newborn son, Danish Modern or his baby sister, Shabby Chic?

I know we’re living in an anything goes baby-naming world. And there have always been strangely named people lurking among the Daniels and Davids and Marys and Julies. I’m, personally, pretty open to strange names, though I really hated that this couple actually wrote “Peanut” on a birth certificate. And only recently has “Zuma Nesta” not driven me to shudder.

In itself, Moroccan isn’t the worst thing they could call their kid. But it’s an awful, awful reason to call him that. Had “Green Room,” “Dining Room” and “Den” already been taken?

Sunny is particularly impressed with the allusion to weaponry the newborn boy’s full name alludes to. She has a post full of pictures of actual Moroccan Cannons. Pow!

What do you think? Will interior design be a big baby-naming trend in 2011?
