Social Media and SCOTUS Ruling On Healthcare

If you’ve ever wondered if social media has had an impact on the mainstream media you need look no further than today and the Supreme’s Courts announcement about the Affordable Care Act.

Many of us were hanging out on Twitter while holding our breath (on both sides of the aisles) watching the 24 hour news networks such as Fox, CNN and MSNBC while awaiting the decision. And once it was handed down, Twitter went CRAZY saying both that the decision had been upheld but that it had also been struck down.

Why? Because two out of the three main 24 hours news channels got it wrong.

Both CNN and Fox News initially reported that the mandate had been struck down. Ironically, CNN did it via twitter, with an announcement on Twitter.

It was retracted shortly after, naturally.

Apparently, even President Obama was confused for a few minutes, thinking that CNN’s reporting was accurate. Wow, that’s gotta be a bad day.

In a CBS News article, several newspaper reporters mentioned that it’s not really possible to scoop a story that is about something being released to the public.

Critics were quick to reprimand the cable network. Twitter was ablaze with scathing commentary, including this tweet from Detroit Free Press editor Brian J. Manzullo.

“Note to CNN: No one would have remembered you posting the *#SCOTUS, decision first. Now everyone will remember you for having it wrong,” tweeted @BrianManzullo.

The Washington Post’s Eric Wemple went further to question how breaking news is defined, writing, “Someone needs to tell CNN: There is no such thing as fashioning a scoop over something that’s released to the public.”

Today was definitely another fun day to be on social media, and a good day for some of us (less good for others). Were you hanging out on social media waiting for the news?
