Getting splashed with water can be up there with the sound of a balloon popping or nails down a chalkboard — a startling and unpleasant sensory overload.
Sure, if you’re a kid, splashing around in a pool or the bath is a riot. But otherwise, getting splashed usually just means you’re soaking wet and probably when you least want to be.
That’s kind of what makes the David Wile and April Maciborka photo series Splash that much funnier and artful. Set against a black backdrop, the reactions of adults and children (and dogs and kangaroos) are captured the moment they’re sprayed, splashed and otherwise dumped on with water.
The water drops sparkle and the people are simply awkward and purely delighted (although maybe not so much the kangaroo). It probably helps that the subjects knew what was coming, thereby eliminating the element of surprise and allowing them to enjoy the moment in which they’re rendered sopping wet. The photos are a child-like reminder that not all childhood antics are just for children.
