This Sunday is a big day in America. It’s not just any old Sunday, it’s Super Bowl Sunday! But there is one thing about big sporting events like the Super Bowl: kids sometimes get bored or feel left out. This is something I know from experience.
My own child has absolutely no interest in baseball, football or any other professional athletic event. But we want her to be part of the fun and enjoy these big popular culture moments, especially this year since our home town team, the San Francisco 49ers, will be playing.
If you find yourself in the same situation, here are eight ways to get your kid engaged on Super Bowl Sunday!

Create Touchdown and Half Time Dances 1 of 8I don't know about your kid, but my daughter loves to dance. She makes up dance routines morning, noon and night. One way to keep your own dance happy kids amused and active during the Super Bowl is to have the little ones work on dance routines for the touchdowns. And between scoring, they can work on their very own half time show for the parents. The kids could really have fun with it, perhaps doing some bird moves (inspired by the Ravens) or some gold panning moves (inspired by the 49ers).
Football Mural 2 of 8Get a BIG roll of paper and spread it on the floor, have them do a mural covering the entire paper and using the game as inspiration. They can draw birds, footballs, end zones, helmets, or anything else they can imagine.
The Food! 3 of 8Get the kids involved in making the foods for the Super Bowl, from decorating mini pizzas with their favorite toppings to creating these delicious potato pizzas above. Engaging them in making the Super Bowl treats is a great way to get them to be part of the action. And if you really want to make them happy, let them decorate cupcakes in the team colors, and what kid doesn't love cupcake decorating?

Rate the Ads 4 of 8One of the big things about the Super Bowl are the ads. If you don't mind having your kids paying attention to the commercials, have them rate the ads! Game Day 7 of 8Forget your standard play date - have a game day game date! Invite your kid's pals over for an extended play date during the game. Put out all your children's favorite games from Candyland to Jenga. Have them keep score and give prizes out to all the winners at the end of the football game. This will keep them busy and engaged plus they have their own reason to celebrate at the end.
Flag Football 8 of 8Get the kids in the mood with a game of flag football before the big game. And if you happen to have a large enough yard or outdoor space, you can have them play football outside while you watch the game. It's also a great way to get moving and keep energized during half time.
