No one likes a bully. But is the remedy to a bully even more bullying?
One teacher at Salinas Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas seemed to think so. Which is why she apparently advised a colleague to discipline an alleged 6-year-old bully by having more than 24 kindergartners line up to hit him, according to Fox News (via the Associated Press).
Both teachers were placed on administrative leave, with the bright one — the one who conceived of the punishment – “not returning to work for the school district next year.” Prosecutors are mulling over whether to file criminal charges.
According to police, the teacher tried to show the mean kid “‘why bullying is bad’ by instructing his peers to ‘Hit him!’ and ‘Hit him harder!’” The other teacher intervened when the so-called bully (the kid, not the teacher) received a hard blow to his upper back.
The alleged bully’s mom said some of the kids hit him twice even though she and the police report indicate a few of his friends actually didn’t want to hit him, but did so “because they were afraid not to.” It was the first the boy’s mom had heard that he was acting like a bully.
There’s no doubt a 6-year-old is capable of being cruel and awful. But how in the world did a teacher think this was the solution to getting the kid to be nice? No one like a bully. So thank goodness the teacher who masterminded the plan against a 6-year-old will not be returning to work anytime soon.
