The hoopla from Rush Limbaugh’s Slutgate has died down a bit, as the national conversation has focused more these days on the shooting death of Trayvon Martin than it has the Republican War on Women. But women are still toiling away, working quietly in the background, trying to bring awareness to right-wing politicians who refuse to respect the autonomy of the female body. What are these women doing, exactly? Why, knitting cozy vaginas for their representatives, of course!
The Snatchel Project, which I discovered via Happy Place, is encouraging women to “knit or crochet a vagina or uterus, print a message to enclose and mail it to your male Senator or Congressional Representative.” This tactic comes on the heels of several Republican politicians having their Facebook walls flooded (eww) with comments about menstruation. Earlier this month Texas women covered Rick Perry’s wall with questions fit only for a gyno in response to the fact that he “refused $35 million intended for Planned Parenthood to provide preventive healthcare to low-income women,” according to Happy Place.
It’s not just the ladies of The Snatchel Project that have been making headlines by using humor to fight back against the encroachment of male leaders in our lady parts. Senator Nina Turner of Ohio drafted some brilliantly subversive legislation that would require men to receive “more intensive screenings” before getting Viagra. Want to join these women in their cause but don’t know how to knit? Check out these handcrafted vagina items, all for sale on Etsy, ranging from the hilarious to the bizarre to the beautiful.
