Babble is running our first ever salute to the top 50 mompreneurs who pull all-nighters, suffer enormous financial set-backs, and balance business and baby every day to make their entrepreneurial dreams come true. Here's how they did it.

Inspiration: “I worked with special needs kids and children with cancer for years, and I constantly saw a need for something that would take the fear out of medicine,” Krumins says. When she was the nanny for a 3-year-old boy with Down Syndrome who was prone to ear infections, Krumins thought about animals that correspond with an ear infection and developed what came to be her first prototype: an elephant medicine dispenser made out of sponges and cloth that talked, thanks to the voice recorder from a Hallmark card. “It worked like a charm,” Krumins says.
Perspiration: An appearance on the ABC entrepreneur series Shark Tank got Krumin and her product off the ground with a $50,000 investment from real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran. “I thought the judges were going to say ‘Oh, you’re a nanny. Go back to your job,’ but they didn’t,” Krumins says. While she was trying to get her product manufactured, Krumins was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had to be isolated from her family because of her radiation treatments. “I hit rock bottom,” she says. Krumins questioned whether she wanted to continue with her business, but her own struggle with the disease helped her understand what children with cancer were going through, and that motivated her to bring her idea to fruition.
Success: Ava the Elephant debuted in 7,000 CVS stores across the country this past November.
