Trick AND a Treat – Soldier Dad Suprises Daughter in School on Halloween

By bethanysanders |

untitledTen-year-old Tina thinks that she’s doing a school report about her dad. He’s Master Sergeant Joe Meyers, currently stationed in Iraq she tells us proudly on her video.

Only he’s not really.  He’s home — whether for leave or for good, we don’t know for sure — and he shows up in Tina’s fourth grade classroom to surprise her (on Halloween) while she gets ready to give her report.

It’s a lovely touching video but one thing kinda bothers me about it. Who is John Davenport and why is he selling this video?

Crap, whatever is in your eye is in my eye too. Quit giving us your sillynanny infection over the internets. Excuse me while I go tear up.

My generation did not have to spend time during our childhood being terrified of losing a parent while they were off to war (my father fought in Vietnam, but I was born in 1979); what wrenched my heart about this video is not only how happy I am for that man to be home safe and with his family, but also how horrified I was when the realization washed over me that this child was probably TERRIFIED for her father and so afraid he would be hurt or killed and she would never see him again. It broke my heart to realize what she must have been going through, and though she got a happy ending (for now, at least), my heart still aches at the thought that any child should ever have to endure such stress. This will always be a part of her – probably a period of time she’d like to forget. I think of all the other children out there and how scared and angry they are and I hurt for each and every one of them.

What a strong little girl! You could see on her video that she was bravely coping with her situation, but when her father showed up, the etchings of all her worry, fear, and uncertainty briefly flashed upon her face as she broke into tears.

I’m no supermodel and I know wishing for world peace is futile, but if I had one wish to be granted, I’d want EVERY child of our servicemen to have their parents back safe and sound.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to purchase a dozen boxes of Kleenex.

This absolutely broke my heart. It hits very close to home. My husband is due back from Iraq in a month and I can’t help but keep wondering what the homecoming is going to be like for my son. I don’t even anticipate sending him to school for a couple of days afterward. The look on that little girl’s face is priceless.
