Last Twinkie Shipment: People Desperately Trying To Get Their Hands On Final Hostess Snacks

Selling like hot cakes.

Last call!

For Twinkies, that is.

With Hostess closing shop for now the last batch of Twinkies and their cousins, Ding Dongs and Orange Cupcakes, has been shipped to a grocery chain in Chicago.

The Jewel-Osco grocery store chain purchased the last shipment of 20,000 boxes of Hostess products and put them on sale in their stores throughout the Chicago area starting Monday. Hostess Brands Inc. shut down operations and began liquidating assets last month after failing to negotiate a labor contract with Workers with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union.

According to Fox News, as a result of the last shipment in Chicago, Twinkie madness is gripping the windy city. Residents are going crazy trying to get their hands on the last shipment.

The A.P. reports more than 20,000 boxes of Twinkies and roughly 5,000 boxes of Ding Dongs, Zingers and Orange Cupcakes were sold Monday and Tuesday.

Mike Siemenas, a spokesman for Supervalu tells Fox taking Hostess’ supplies off its hands was a no-brainer.  “Once we received a call from Hostess asking if we would take the products, we told them we would take 100 percent of what they had. And based on the demand that the Chicago market had for Hostess products, we knew that that was the best place for them.”

Siemenas says phones at the store are ringing off the hook with people seeking the cakey treats. He says they’ve received calls from people living as far away as Arizona looking for their Twinkie fix.

You can still get the confection online as well. Yesterday nearly 2,000 items on eBay contained the word “Twinkie”. An unopened box of 10 Twinkies was reportedly going for $120,000, according to Fox.

“GET THIS ORIGINAL BOX 10 COUNT INDIVIDUALLY WRAP CAKES NOW FACTORY SEALED,” the listing reads. “YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO GET IT ANYWHERE ELSE AGAIN — ALSO GOING TO GOOD CAUSE.”

Another listing reads “I have for bid a Twinkie twin pack that is fresh and sell date is Dec 15th! Free shipping!”

Siemenas says people are driving to the store from hours away, all to get their hands on one of America’s favorite snacks. What about you? What would you do for a Twinkie? Are you bummed about Hostess closing shop or is it good riddance for the sugary, calorie laden snack?
