Where Gay Couples Are Really Raising KidsMonica Bielanko
You’d think San Francisco right? Maybe New York or one of America’s other large cities.
But, according to the LA Times, my hometown, Salt Lake City has the second highest rate of same-sex couples raising kids. I was shocked. To be honest with you, I moved from the Mormon-controlled city to get away from the super conservative environment I didn’t want my kids to grow up in.
However, because it’s so affordable and family-friendly, gay couples with kids are far more likely to head to Salt Lake City where 25% of gay couples are also parents, the highest percentage of gay families behind only Mississippi (another shocker at 26%) even though New York and Los Angeles have a higher number of gay families. Virginia Beach, Va., Detroit and Memphis, Tenn are some other large urban areas where gay couples are more likely to have children with more than a fifth of couples of the same sex bringing up kids.
Gary J. Gates, the researcher behind the data, says one reason for the high rates of parenthood among gay couples in cities and states like Salt Lake and Mississipp is that many of them originally had children with opposite sex partners, came out later in life and are now rearing their kids with a same sex partner.
