One of my biggest obsessions this year has been Instagram (IG), and I just can’t stop talking about it to anyone and everyone. There’s been lots of analysis on why IG is so popular, but let me give you my entirely unscientific opinion on why it rocked 2011: it’s about the humanity of it all.
What I mean by this is that IG brings a human element, that relationship element, to really easily sharing photos. The filters are lovely and very hipstamatic-ish and the user interface is swell and stylish and all those other techy things are really stellar and a part of the formula. But what I think is the magic ingredient is that IG brings people together in a seemingly intimate way just like Twitter did.
For my own example of this — this past week I was visiting family across the country and actually got my hair cut and styled by someone I met on IG. She was stylish and fabulous so I knew she’d be amazing…
She saw me comment on another IG user’s photo that I was wishing for a haircut during my visit to Arizona, and she left a comment that she’d love to do my hair. A few emails and texts later and she and I were hugging in real life, sharing baby stories and having a blast. Worlds collide, and all that jazz.
I’ve now created friendships with people *solely* on Instagram, I follow people there first and THEN discover their blog, and still others don’t even link to a blog (maybe just an Etsy store or their Twitter page) and we get to know each other just through IG comments. I received gifts for my new baby from people I met only on IG. It’s really truly the smaller, pic focused, iPhone only new Twitter.
Now that you can follow IG photos online with Followgram, what’s stopping you from getting in on the action?
