As Sarah Palin gets closer to deciding whether or not she’ll run for president in 2012, something she told Barbara Walters she’s considering based on whether or not it’s a “good thing for the country, for the discourse, for (her) family,” she might want to consider whether or not it’s a good thing for her family members to be on Facebook. Her 16-year-old daughter Willow was caught using homophobic slurs on Facebook this weekend, just as her mother’s reality show was setting records as the most watched premiere in TLC history.
A classmate of Willow’s named Tre posted a status update reading, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska, is failing soo hard right now.” Palin’s eldest daughter, Bristol, was the first to respond. She writes, “You’re running your mouth just to talk sh-t.” Bristol quickly accuses Tre of only pretending he didn’t know what Dancing with the Stars was (aww, poor girl, I don’t know if I should laugh or cry about that) and then Willow begins to weigh in, adding, “your so gay” and “your such a faggot.”
I’m not sure what’s worse: the fact that the daughter of a vice presidential and possibly presidential candidate used two gay slurs in one thread, the fact that the daughter of V.P. candidate Palin doesn’t know the difference between you’re and your, or the fact that neither of those things surprise me in any way whatsoever.
The Huffington Post has the entire comment thread if you’d like to take a look. Willow’s big sister Bristol apologized for both of their behavior in an update on her Facebook page today, in which she said, “(We) shouldn’t have reacted to negative comments about our family. We apologize.” Then she thanked everyone who is “supporting the great competition in Dancing with the Stars!”
Oh. My. God.
Gawker reports that gay conservative group GoProud has also come to Willow Palin’s defense. In a statement, the breakaway Log Cabin Republicans commented about Willow’s choice language, saying, “The slur used here is one you could hear on the streets of West Hollywood or Chelsea every day of the week. Apparently, it’s only a homophobic slur when it comes from the daughter of a conservative female leader. Make no mistake; this is all about destroying Sarah Palin by any means necessary.”
Being someone who is up to my knees in all things glittery and gay, I can’t really argue with that logic, other than to say sure, you might overhear Chelsea Daddies calling each other homo, but that’s an acceptable part of their culture. (Here’s a tip, Willow: it’s also okay for black people to use the n word. If I were you, I wouldn’t try it.) Then again, using homophobic and likely racist slurs is part of the culture in a town like Wasilla, Alaska. I grew up in a largely poor, white, lower middle class town myself, and I heard all kinds of ugly words as a kid. (And for the record, I used the word “gay” to describe things I thought were dumb just like everyone else I went to high school with – including my gay friends.) Willow Palin is a product of her environment, which doesn’t excuse her behavior. It just means that mama grizzly Sarah isn’t doing much in the way of grooming her cubs for the White House. Which, for the country and the discourse, is probably a good thing.
