Holiday Affective Disorder
How to recognize the signs and get help

The holidays are upon us, which means more and more parents will suffer from Holiday Affective Disorder. Not to be confused with Seasonal Affective Disorder, Holiday Affective Disorder covers a wide range of manic symptoms including overwhelming feelings of nostalgia, frustration and extreme guilt paired with weight gain, binge eating, high blood pressure, and sleeplessness. Sufferers have delusions of grandeur, believing they have the ability to create meals of prime rib and make place cards out of pine cones while hosting family, friends, random neighbors, stranded co-workers, and pets, while also wearing an infant and taking care of hyperactive children. Oftentimes, people detach from reality, believing they can actually create a perfect holiday. Sound familiar? Heres how to recognize the signs and get help

Mania
When you have taken 1,200 photos of your children fighting, frowning, and closing their eyes in front of the fireplace for your holiday card, its time to stop. Make a collage of the most ridiculous combinations and use this as your card. Your friends (unlike your kids) will smile when they receive it, and isnt that the point of the holidays spreading good cheer? http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-2/stress-family-holiday-2http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-2/ -
Poor hygiene
Who has time to wash and dry those tresses when youre busy making a North Pole diorama with your children? If theres glitter in your hair left over from that madcap winter wonderland, just rock, stop and shop and let it be. Whats a little glitter on your pillowcase? http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-3/stress-family-holiday-3http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-3/ -
Binge eating
While preparing pigs in blankets or canapés or eight-dozen cookies for the cookie swap, of course youre going to pick here and there. And of course youre going to gain weight. But you have choices! Depending on your audience, stock up on Spanx or elasticized pants. Youll be able to eat to your hearts (and stomachs) content.http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-4/stress-family-holiday-4http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-4/ -
Sleeplessness
When are you ever going to find the time to hide all those presents and wrap them to perfection in secret? Just staring at your growing collection of wrapping paper and ribbons is causing you to have nightmares in which your kids come downstairs on Christmas morning only to find you still wrapping gifts that Santa supposedly left. Do yourself a favor and shove those gifts in bags and plop ready-made bows on them. Youll avoid paper cuts and youll save trees (and maybe even your sanity). http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-5/stress-family-holiday-5http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-5/ -
Extreme guilt
Its December and theres an elf on the shelf so the kids will behave throughout a long holiday dinner on china plates and engage older relatives in conversation. What?! Snap out of it. Put those children at a kids table in the other room. We all know trees that fall when no ones there make a sound; If a child puts mashed potatoes on his sisters head when no adult is there, did it happen? Not as far as we know. http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-6/stress-family-holiday-6http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-6/ -
Frustration
You can only talk about the cranberry sauce for so long. If the conversation gets heated, play a drinking game with your closest ally: Each time Uncle Lou says something offensive, take a sip of wine.http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-7/stress-family-holiday-7http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-7/ -
High blood pressure
You know youre an adult and its not about you anymore, but come on, we all want something shiny under the tree with our name on it. You get all excited to see what your mother-in-law/partner/parent got you this year only to open a new iron. Just explain away the cause of your tears as sheer happiness that everyone is together again.http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-8/stress-family-holiday-8http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-8/ -
The prognosis
While the exact cause is unknown, some theorize our materialistic society and/or Martha Stewart is to blame. The disorder affects women (98%) more than men (2%). At this time, there is no FDA-approved treatment and there is no cure. Promising research shows that going to the Caribbean in lieu of celebrating the holidays at home may ease symptoms. Those suffering from H.A.D. often cant help themselves; they need others around them to lend a helping hand.http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-9/stress-family-holiday-9http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-9/ -
Remember:
If it can be cooked, it can be cooked by someone else.
If it can be sewed, it can be glue-gunned.
If it can be made, it can be bought on Etsy.http://www.babble.com/mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-10/stress-family-holiday-10http://www.babble.com/mom/work-family/stress-family-holiday//mom/stress-family-holiday/stress-family-holiday-10/

I really like this because I needed someone to tell me to chill out. It’s not that big of a deal if the holiday card picture “looks” professional or like a snapshot! Thanks for helping me!
Other symptoms: 1)family drama over unrealistic expectations of peace and harmony that doesn’t exist at any other time of year, 2)self-criticism over not feeling the love of “holiday spirit”, 3)fear of being alone at the holidays or of Uncle Dave/Aunt Susie getting drunk again and causing a scene.
Thanks for sharing, everyone. I think the expectations of holidays cause so much pain for many. For me, humor always makes things better. I hope all of you have a calm, guilt-free holiday season.

Wise words indeed! I do blame Martha Stewart, just so you know.
I love adding a sense of humor to stressful situations, but think it’s worth adding this note: For people who do suffer from anxiety which is heightened during the holidays, these “symptoms” are very real and are a very hard thing to deal with. I myself suffer from anxiety disorder which is particularly bad at this time of year with so much to get done. I’m a working mother of 3, work in a demanding job, and still very much feel the pressure and guilt to make sure my family has a lovely holiday season. If this is something that you are suffering with, please be kind to yourself and see a doctor or do something to treat your anxiety rather than suffer with it. Life can be much better with help. I speak from experience here.
It might be hard for someone who doesn’t deal with this to understand that the jokes make it seem like it’s not real and we should just be able to get over it. I know where the article is coming from, but I just wanted to add a subtext that if someone who is really suffering right now reads this, you’re not alone and there are things you can do to ease it.
Take care.
