    Other symptoms: 1)family drama over unrealistic expectations of peace and harmony that doesn’t exist at any other time of year, 2)self-criticism over not feeling the love of “holiday spirit”, 3)fear of being alone at the holidays or of Uncle Dave/Aunt Susie getting drunk again and causing a scene.

    I love adding a sense of humor to stressful situations, but think it’s worth adding this note: For people who do suffer from anxiety which is heightened during the holidays, these “symptoms” are very real and are a very hard thing to deal with. I myself suffer from anxiety disorder which is particularly bad at this time of year with so much to get done. I’m a working mother of 3, work in a demanding job, and still very much feel the pressure and guilt to make sure my family has a lovely holiday season. If this is something that you are suffering with, please be kind to yourself and see a doctor or do something to treat your anxiety rather than suffer with it. Life can be much better with help. I speak from experience here.

    It might be hard for someone who doesn’t deal with this to understand that the jokes make it seem like it’s not real and we should just be able to get over it. I know where the article is coming from, but I just wanted to add a subtext that if someone who is really suffering right now reads this, you’re not alone and there are things you can do to ease it.
