Tim Poe on America's Got Talent

My kid and I have found our first ever pop culture phenomenon to bond over: we love watching America’s Got Talent together. It happened totally accidentally, and started with a few viewings of American Idol, which is a total gateway drug to #AGT (what they call it on the street). Until this year I haven’t really let my daughter watch any programming not specifically meant for kids, but I figured talent shows are family-friendly enough, and #AGT provides me with the perfect opportunity to teach her about showmanship. Last night while we were watching she said, “They had a lot of TA-DA on their landings!,” and I knew I’d done something right.

What I wasn’t prepared for was bawling at country singer Tim Poe’s amazing story of having survived a grenade attack in Afghanistan. Poe told cameras during an off-stage interview, “When I was lying there I thought that I was never gonna be able to see my daughter walk down the aisle, or throw the baseball with my son again, or be able to hold them and see them.” Poe suffered neurological damage that has left him with a stutter when he speaks, but not when he sings, which he does sweetly. Here’s a look at his incredibly touching story and the audition in Austin that sent him to Vegas:
