Tim Poe on America's Got Talent

My kid and I have found our first ever pop culture phenomenon to bond over: we love watching America’s Got Talent together. It happened totally accidentally, and started with a few viewings of American Idol, which is a total gateway drug to #AGT (what they call it on the street). Until this year I haven’t really let my daughter watch any programming not specifically meant for kids, but I figured talent shows are family-friendly enough, and #AGT provides me with the perfect opportunity to teach her about showmanship. Last night while we were watching she said, “They had a lot of TA-DA on their landings!,” and I knew I’d done something right.

What I wasn’t prepared for was bawling at country singer Tim Poe’s amazing story of having survived a grenade attack in Afghanistan. Poe told cameras during an off-stage interview, “When I was lying there I thought that I was never gonna be able to see my daughter walk down the aisle, or throw the baseball with my son again, or be able to hold them and see them.” Poe suffered neurological damage that has left him with a stutter when he speaks, but not when he sings, which he does sweetly. Here’s a look at his incredibly touching story and the audition in Austin that sent him to Vegas:

I hate to bring bad news as it still needs to be investigated but soldiers from Tim Poe’s old company are stepping out to say that his entire story is a lie. As the wife of a service member, if it comes out that he lied about everything, I might actually throw up. Anyone who would lie about such things sicken me.

    1. carolyncastiglia says:

Wow! Well, it takes a lot of balls to lie like that on national TV, so I would assume he’s telling the truth, but I guess you’ll know by the end of the summer!

  2. Anonymous says:

Tim Poe is a fraud. He was never injured during his deployment in Afganistan. His stutter is a ploy it pull innocent people into his fake sob story. While its true he was a part of the WTB in Fort Sam Houston, for a back injury that’s related to training. He however, never suffered an RPG to the head and his neurological issues are fake. He’s using his veteran status as a way to gain sympathy and votes on the show AGT. How do I know all of this? I was at Fort San the same time Tim was. He is an able bodied individual with no speech impediments what do ever. He should feel ashamed to fake injuries than so many service members suffer in silence with each day. The truth will be known and he will be shown to be a fake, fraud and an all around horrible human being for his elaborate lies.

  3. Army_SFC says:

This is what’s going around the Facebook military community, with an addition every time I see it:

“If anyone watched America’s got talent… Tim Poe is a lying fake who played the ‘disabled vet card’ to gain entry to the contest. He was in my unit 114th transportation company in 09/10 in Helmand province Afghanistan … He was sent home for an ear infection and some back problems because he did t like his vest and the heat.! Now he lied to America and got on AGT saying he was hit with an rpg which broke his back and cause a tbi which now causes him to stutter! He never saw combat ! He if fucking over ALL disabled vets and the mn national guard and his old unit. He thought because the unit is in Minnesota and he was in Texas that no one would find out…. Guess what you lying sob.!!!!? it was on national tv.! They are calling a press conference! Members of your old unit contacted everyone … Including the stolen valor act ! Burn bitch”

    In addition:
James Sabyan posted on Facebook page.. “Timothy Poe is a liar. I was his Squad Leader in Afghanistan and the things he is claiming NEVER happened. He was sent back to the states because of issues which were completely unrelated to his time in Afghanistan. In the few weeks that he was there he never cleared buildings, he was never exposed to direct hostile fire, he never even left the base! Our unit had people who were legitimately wounded and one who lost his life. Poe’s claims are a direct slap in their face.”

Poe’s ex-wife, Kelly Poe, posted.. “I was married to him from 1999-2004. Know him since 1996, and have a son with him. Something needs to be done about these lies and all the others too.”

  4. Chris says:

He is telling a false story. The public affairs department for the 114th transportation battalion in Minnesota are working on getting the information put out.

  5. Mdzie28 says:

He’s faking the injury, his injury isn’t in the purple heart data base. Fraud!!!!!

  6. Mdzie28 says:

I watched the video of his audition and for someone who claims to have a stuttering problem, is really good at controlling when he stutters.

  7. Master Sgt. Daniel Ewer says:

STATEMENT FROM THE MINNESOTA NATIONAL GUARD

~~ Attributable to Lt. Col. Kevin Olson, Spokesman for the Minnesota National Guard ~~

Sgt. Timothy Michael Poe served in the Minnesota Army National Guard from Dec. 3, 2002 until May 26, 2011, and performed as a supply specialist.

His military records indicate that he served with the Minnesota National Guard in Kosovo from Oct. 10, 2007 until July 15, 2008, and was deployed to Afghanistan from July 28, 2009 to Aug. 30, 2009.

Sgt. Poe’s official military records do not indicate that he was injured by a grenade in combat while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, as he reports. The Minnesota National Guard can also confirm that he was not awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds sustained in combat.

Amazing. I could watch it over and over again! Special story and beautiful smile!!

  10. Sheila says:

I was taken by his story I even cried for him…. This is a terrible thing that has happen. Here are some questions
    1) Is he really fake stuttering?
2)Why would he go on national television knowing that he would be called a fake?

The story’s that I see makes me very sad , that Tim would use the story he told to get on television

  11. Sailors Princess says:

to IDK…. I agree I am not married but engaged an to a Sailor who is deployed as we speak, type lol. An If I found out he was lieing I would feel sadden an worse the throw up I would feel embarrassed an bad for anyone who served with him. An hopes they don’t get looked down on upon for his ways. I really hope he isn’t lieing that is one thing I don’t know why anyone would lie about.

  12. Tim says:

Wow…..never thought this liar would ever pop up again. Now maybe I can get the money he conned my wife and I loaned to him when he was supposedly destitute and widowed.

  13. Niaka Reed says:

    http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2012/06/05/no-record-america-got-talent-contestant-claimed-combat-injury/

You may want to check out this link. The military has NO record of any such injury. He’s a lying, faking, POS.

  14. Old on the inside says:

I usually don’t express my opinions openly about my military service as I’m no hero. I’m not looking for hand shakes or pats on the back and kind of keep myself about why I’m now disabled. Maybe when I accept the fact that I’m a disabled veteran and can find some pride in there somewhere, then I’ll be like the others and be proud of my service. Until then in this bottle it stays.

However after fighting with VA because of real injuries that I received, finally getting closer to a resolution and here comes Mr. Fake The Funk to push me and countless others back down the drain. I hope after doing my research on this event that it turns out that NBC was the mastermind behind the fabbed up story. According to Simon Cowell he said he wouldn’t put it past the shows producers to fab it up for ratings…..

  15. Michael Doesken says:

Complete inconsistencies, “controlled” stuttering, tap-dancing, shuffle-stepping, etc. He’s a liar. I’m active duty Army, and a combat veteran. This disgusts me, and I pray I never see him. He will burn for this one.

  16. HURT says:

Unfortunately, I doubt that the producers would take a chance to invent this type of lie. They would have to know the backlash. On the other hand, this lie, this story is really one that only Tim could pull off. Tim creates different stories for different times in his life. I use to pity him, going through life with only lies as words. Now, I hope that he will be punished for the choice that I am sure that he alone was the mastermind of this brainchild. Those of you that believe his story please continue to believe that our veterans suffer and do go through heartache and appreciate all that they do for us. Do not let this rotton apple spoil your opinion on our veterans. Continue to support and appreciate all service members.

  17. Mary Abellera says:

I have never in my life imagined that someone would do something so horrific as to lie about injuries suffered in a war where our soldiers are beinging killed and severely injured. I cry everytime I hear of the death of a soldier fighting for our live and our country. I find this so dispicable that I can’t even fathom that it is not true. What type of man would do something like this? He needs help but not the kind that anyone on this earth could give him.

  18. read this says:

His records were released today. Everything he said was true. now everyone that said it wasn’t true, looks stupid.
