Now here’s a children’s book parody I can totally get behind! It was announced yesterday that Stephen Colbert’s fake children’s book “I Am a Pole (And So Can You!)” will be published by Grand Central Books, available May 8th. Colbert read the book to Maurice Sendak during the second part of their interview that aired in January. Sendak called the book, “terribly ordinary,” adding, “the sad thing is I like it.”
The book is not for children, with references to strippers and all, but it is hilariously funny. It works as satire because like Adam Mansbach’s “Go the F*ck to Sleep,” but unlike “Goodnight Husband, Goodnight Wife,” it parodies children’s books as a whole, not a specific and beloved children’s story.
Here’s the original Colbert clip during which he pitches the book idea to Sendak, replete with illustrations. When I saw this the first time I knew “I Am a Pole” was going to be published. I’m so happy.
