22-year-old Diann Ford was “excited about her future as a mother” according to her boss, Kris Jaccard, who was the last person to see her Tuesday before she was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver. Ford, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was walking home from her job at Long John Silver’s in San Marcos, TX when she was hit.
Ford was struck “as she was crossing the southbound Interstate 35 access road,” My San Antonio reports. “Ford had tried crossing the access road in an area where there wasn’t a crosswalk. She was wearing dark-colored clothing at night,” My San Antonio notes. The young woman was rushed to University Medical Center, Brackenridge in Austin where she gave birth to a baby girl via C-section on Wednesday. The newborn was taken to the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit, but will not have the chance to know her mother, who died Thursday.
Ford was found by a passing motorist and was conscious when emergency responders arrived at the scene. She told officers that a dark-colored vehicle with very bright headlights hit her. Authorities are still searching for the driver responsible for Ford’s death. It’s unknown who will care for Ford’s daughter.
