A new study written up in the New York Times Green blog today says that we’re all being exposed to more BPA than we think.
A lot more. We’re taking in about 8 times the amount the EPA considers safe, every day. That amount is a red flag for those who are concerned about the chemical’s ability to mimic human hormones. It’s also an inidicator that we absorb BPA from sources that scientists don’t clearly understand yet.
While the debate over the health effects of BPA rages in Congress, studies like this one move scientists ever closer to a clear understanding of what the checmical does to our bodies. And it’s not pretty.
The important piece of this new research is that it shows people are definitely carrying a substantial load of BPA in their systems.
We still don’t know what the health effects of it will turn out to be, but they can involve fertility problems, obesity, diabetes, and many other health issues. Because BPA mimics estrogen, it may cause a wide array of health issues.
The known means of exposure are through polycarbonate plastics and canned goods. Most of us have probably tossed our old baby bottles in favor of BPA-free versions by now.
