Did you know that different colored labs can be born in same litter?

It’s no surprise to anyone who knows me that I adore Labrador Retrievers. My fondness for them went up exponentially when we adopted our pup, Django, last year from New York’s North Shore Animal Center.

She is the perfect blend of friend, companion, and fun for our crazy family. But I’m not the only one who has a special affection for Labs. In fact, the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds for families year after year.

If you are considering a medium to large-sized dog to introduce into your family, here are 10 reasons why Labs are just awesome:

Little grooming

Their coats are incredibly easy to care for, and they only require a bath here and there. No hair cuts or any extra grooming required, and their fur dries off in minutes because their thick outer coat naturally repels water.

Important thing to remember: chew ’til they’re two, shed ’til they’re dead. I love my lab: my daughter can dress her up, drag her around, jump on her, and not even a growl. She alarm barks but is wonderful with strangers (ie friends she hasn’t met yet). But the shedding is pretty enormous. Like as in vacuum everyday. And at 9, she no longer chews up shoes or breaks out of her kennel, but she does garbage surf. She is very food motivated. As in, she recently hoisted her arthritic ass up to the counter and knocked down a container with chicken bones. And the trash is not safe.

Anyone that is going to get a lab or lab cross: exercise the body and mind. Food or throwing a ball is a treat. Teach new tricks frequently. Use a furminator daily. Diets high in omega 3 fatty acids are good for this guy. If your dog has orthopedic problems: swim them. Allergies, especially food allergies causing recurrent ear problems are common. Obesity and hypothyroid are also an issue.
