While many of us try to volunteer throughout the year, the holiday season is often a time when people are feeling extra thankful and make even more of an effort to do for others. Being able to do volunteer work with your pet is an added bonus. It’s rewarding for you and your pet, as well as for the recipient of your kindness. There are many ways you can involve your pet in volunteering, from pet therapy to search and rescue.
Before bringing your pet anywhere, you should check with the organization for whom you want to volunteer. Some perfectly lovely pets do not necessarily make great volunteer animals. This is why most places have screening and training requirements. Regardless of where you and your pet volunteer, here are some of the “musts” for all pets:
- Be well-behaved and have good manners.
- Be relaxed around loud talking and noises.
- Enjoy being greeted and petted by strangers.
- Clean bill of health from a veterinarian .
- Be clean and odor-free.
