Beyond Cat & Dog: 12 Surprising and Unusual Pets

By Devan McGuinness |

Since I could remember, I have always wanted to have a pig for my pet. I grew up with dogs and cats, rabbits and hamsters around me at various times in my childhood, but forever wished for a pig. I still want one and hope that one day, I can get my cute pig named Otis and add him to my family. It’s not your typical dog or cat, but come on, they are adorable and under-rated!

Turns out, I am not the only one who seeks animals outside the ‘normal’ and some people keep pets that I would never even think you could — let alone actually call them ‘family’. Who am I to judge though, you love who you love, right?

Growing up we’ve had stick bugs, hermit crabs, tree frogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, a hedgehog, hamsters, fish, horses, goats, 2 orphaned raccoons, birds, scorpion. =)

I’ve had hermit crabs,a rabbit, a turtle , an australian sheperd, fish, birds, some anoles, 2 genuie pigs, and at least 4 cats that I can think of off the top of my head ( one was a siamese and Himalayn mix he lived to be 20 some odd years old, another was a black female cat , an male orange tabby cat, and a male black and white cat ) the last two on the list of cats are currently alive and my dad has a beardie, oh and grandmother has a “poodle and dauschaund mix “that thought anything that came into the house was her baby. A cockroach however would probally never enter our house so long as my mother has any say in it , and if I have any say in it no matter what the parents say a scorpian or spider are not entering this house if they plan on it living very long at all because I am not a bug loving kind of girl. However the hedgehog IF I was allowed to own one where we live I would own one ASAP because they are soo cute same goes for the de-scented skunk and it would be named flower because I can

whoa, my hedge hog is pretty darn cute, but he does NOT love to cuddle, and I don’t think he’s the only one who feels that way. :)
