Many rescue dogs have incredible stories. Our dogs and cats were all rescues and they are some of the most loving and loyal pets we have ever had. Most owners agree that rescue dogs have a special bond; some say they know that they were rescued.
Fortunately, a lot of rescue pups are saved just in the nick of time, like a canine found in a Houston shelter who will soon become a Broadway star.
Aptly named Sunny, this lucky pup had just two days left before she was to be euthanized when famed animal trainer William Berloni saw her photo and had to have her for the show. It was a stroke of incredible luck especially given the fact that there are hundreds if not thousands of rescue dogs in shelters all across the country who might play “Sandy” in the latest production of Annie.
Berloni first began rescuing shelter dogs to play Sandy in 1977. Since then he has saved dozens of dogs and turned them into stars.
“For the last 35 years, I’ve been only using shelter dogs for productions. Because dogs in shelters, there’s nothing wrong with them. They’re actually great, and they make great stars on Broadway and great stars in your home.”
What makes this story even better is that for each ticket to the show sold through the end of next year, “Pedigree will donate $2 (up to $1 million) for a fund dedicated to helping dogs find homes”.
