Enough Bad Press: Here Are 16 Pit Bulls Being Affectionate and Adorable (Photos)

Come to the Dark Side. We have jerky treats.

For a breed that’s not even really a breed, Pit Bulls sure get a lot of press.

Pit Bull, a generic term, may refer to any number of breeds: the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier, or a mix of those breeds.

And they sure do get more than their fair share of press.

Studies by the National Canine Research Center have found that Pit Bull-related injuries are consistently over-reported in the media. For example, in one four-day span, four similar, serious dog attacks were reported. Three involved non-Pit Bull breeds, and were each reported on once or twice by local media. A fourth incident, which involved a Pit Bull, was reported on in over 230 articles in national and international newspapers, as well as major television news networks including CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

In fact, the most dangerous dog, in terms of Emergency Room trips, is simply an unneutered male dog, says the ASPCA. Unneutered male dogs, which are 2.6 times more likely to bite than their neutered counterparts, account for about three-quarters of all dog bite-related ER visits. Unspayed females can cause problems as well, because they attract unneutered dogs.

Granted, Pit Bull-type dogs are strong, says the Pit Bull Rescue Center, which recommends enrolling in obedience training as soon as they are up-to-date on shots.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and American Pit Bull Terriers can all be loving, devoted family pets. To prove the point, check out these 16 photos of so-called Pit Bulls being affectionate and adorable!

"I pray for a time when cooler heads will prevail when it comes to dogs called pit bulls," says Babble Pets writer Cecily K. "After all, just because your dog isn't a pit mix of some kind doesn't mean your baby is safe alone with it. What we need is better education about responsible pet ownership, laws about breeding and neutering, and just being SMARTER. Because it really isn't about pit bulls. It's about idiots."
