Man Leaves Bulldog Pups For Dead In Luggage, Along With Personal IDDanielle Sullivan
In college, I took a criminology class and one of the first things the professor said at the start of the semester was that criminals were stupid. It’s a phrase I’ve often thought about over the years, especially while covering outlandish stories which illustrated the statement. Today’s story in the NY Daily News once again reminded me of this phrase.
A Toledo man left six newborn puppies in a luggage case and abandoned them outdoors next to a garbage bin. Soon after the puppies were left there to die, a passerby fund the suitcases and rescued the puppies. That’s when they realized that the man, 53-year-old Howard Davis had also left his identification tag in his luggage with all his personal contact on it, allowing authorities to locate him almost instantly.
“It’s kind of like the bank robber who writes a note with his address on it,” John Dinon, director of the Toledo Area Humane Society, told PEOPLE Magazine. “It did not take Sherlock Holmes to find him.”
The 4-week-old Bulldog mix pups (3 girls, 3 boys) were in decent condition because they were found so quickly. When authorities went to Davis’ home, they found the pups’ mother who had visibly given birth recently and was very thin, the humane society assumes because she had been nursing.
The puppies and their 3-year-old mother (who was removed from Davis’ home) will now go to a foster home, after spending a few days in the Toledo Humane Society until they are old enough to be adopted.
There are reports that Davis had tried selling the pups but then gave up and left them for dead.
“It’s unfortunate he chose to abandon the dogs,” said John Dinon, the Humane Society’s executive director. “If he had just called us and said he couldn’t care for them, we would have taken them and he wouldn’t have been charged with a crime.”
Davis now faces charges of two misdemeanor charges of abandoning animals, but unfortunately (in my opinion) has not been arrested. Davis must appear in Toledo Municipal Court on April 13.
I, for one, hope he gets the maximum penalties for his crimes.
