There has been a huge recall on pet food after 14 people were stricken with salmonella. Now, if you’re like me, you might question how these people – humans, not pets – came down with salmonella from their dog’s food, wondering if they were feasting on Fido’s food as well. But as it turns out, these pet owners got sick just from handling the dog food in question.
What is wrong with the food and what brands are affected?
According to St. Louis Today, all the dog food allegedly had come from the same South Carolina plant that made news in 2005 when a toxic mold found on their food had killed dozens of dogs. The company was hit with a $3.1 million dollar settlement.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the food came from the Diamond Pet Foods plant in Gaston, S.C., which makes Canidae, Natural Balance, Apex, Kirkland, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Country Value, Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge, Professional, 4Health and Taste of the Wild. “Our folks are really wanting people to be aware of it. They want to be aware that this is causing people to get sick because they may have product in their homes. For every one that is reported, there may be 29 others,” CDC spokeswoman Lola Russell stated. Be sure to check your pet’s food!
