Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium describes Nellie as “a well-trained sea otter.” In this video, Nellie “practices a special cup stacking enrichment and demonstrate trained behaviors with her pal, Abra.”
Translation: Nellie is better at cup-stacking than my kids. Perhaps I need to think of cup-stacking as “enrichment” instead of “that thing my kids do where they steal all our plastic IKEA cups and I find them later in the weirdest places.”
Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, located in Tacoma, Washington, houses several sea otters, besides Nellie and Abra. They also have Homer, a female sea otter who is one of two remaining Exxon Valdez survivors in US zoos. The Zoo is looking forward to celebrating Sea Otter Awareness Day on September 23, which will involve fresh oysters, frozen treat otter pops and giant ice treat toys. (For the otters, not the visitors.)
