Somebody Save Me! Sam the Dog Plucked From Angry River (Video)

By Serge Bielanko |

Oy vey.

When I lived in Utah, the snows would begin melting high in the mountains every spring like clockwork. And that’s when dog owners like me grew a little bit nervous.

The “runoff” as it’s called could last for up to two months, and though the Salt Lake Valley is a mecca for pet pooch lovers with it’s huge dog parks and other dog friendly trails and swimming holes, every year there are tragedies. Because no matter how cautious most dog-people are at this time of year, inevitably someone’s dog gets swept up in a stream or a creek turned into a raging torrent by all of that melting snow.

So, it’s not a surprising story that I bring you today, but it is a one with a happy ending, at least.

Last Friday, Manchester, New Hampshire resident, Steve Soba, took his golden retriever, Sam, for a walk in a park on the Merrimack River. At one point Steve let Sam off his leash so he could burn off a little steam and that’s when Sam managed to get himself in some trouble. He descended some steps that dumped right into the river below, a river which was unusually high and thanks to recent rainstorms.

Unfortunately, according to WMUR/New Hampshire, there are large walls along the river for most of the park’s length, so as soon as Sam hit the water and began being swept downstream on the swift current, there was no way for anyone to get down to his level and try to get him out. The station reports that lots of onlookers came to the wall with a panicked Soba and began to shout encouraging words to Sam so that he might stay close to the edge of the river until the opportunity for a rescue came about.

In video provided by WMUR, we get a first hand glimpse at every dog owner’s worst nightmare as a visibly shaken Soba keeps calling out to Sam, trying to keep his best buddy alert to his presence with his own familiar voice.

Luckily, we also get that happy ending, too. And big kudos to the Manchester Fire Department for saving that 6 year old daredevil!
