The Smartest (and Not So Smartest) Dog Breeds
As I’ve mentioned before, we have a Chihuahua and a Labrador Retriever. Both are rescue muttigrees. The lab will sit, stay, lie down, give paw (and other paw) and speak all within 3 seconds of when a bone is presented to her. The Chihuahua will do none of these things, unless she really, really wants the food you are offering her. Then she might give you her paw.
So which one is smarter? The lab will do all the commands while the Chihuahua will look at you, testing you as a cat might, thinking “just try me’. She’s definitely slyer and more calculated while the lab is just a sloppy happy-go-lucky Marmaduke type.
In any case, some say labs are a intelligent breed, while you probably won’t find Chihuahuas on any “smart” lists. Honestly, I don’t care which dog is more clever or shrewd; they are both wonderful, loving members of our family.
Petside.com listed the top dog breeds for the smartest, and let’s say not so smartest breeds. Here are six from each list:
Magna Cum Laude Breeds
Poodle
German Shepherd Dog
Doberman Pinscher
Shetland Sheepdog
Papillon
Labrador Retriever
At Least They Passed….
Afghan hound
Basenji
Bulldog
Chow chow
Bloodhound
Pekingese
I tend to think that you really can’t say which breed is actually smarter. Every dog (like every person) is different, not to mention unique and loving.
Do you agree with this list or find it all a bunch of baloney?
