Turtle Heartbreak: 115 Years of Marriage Ends in Spousal Abuse

Bibi and Poldi, Giant Turtles Divorcing

So, after, 115 years together, Bibi couldn’t take it anymore. She lashed out, and bit off a big chuck of her partner Poldi’s shell.

Ouch.

Bibi and Poldi have been together since they were young, eventually becoming a couple. They were together at the Basel Zoo in Switzerland before moving to their current home in Austria.

For 36 years they lived in harmony in their Austrian zoo, but no more. Apparently, Bibi is just DONE.

Zoo officials attempted to resolve the dispute to no avail.

Zoo management have called in animal experts to try and give the pair counselling – feeding them romantic good mood food and trying to get them to join in joint games – but so far without effect. Zoo boss Helga Happ said: “We get the feeling they can’t stand the sight of each other anymore.”

But the zoo isn’t going to give up trying to make it work out.

“We have staff talking to and trying to engage the two in interacting, and we hope that they might find their harmony again,” Happ said. “We were told that it’s very rare that after so many years animals who are a pair will fall apart, but that’s where we are. We hope though we can bring round a reconciliation.”

I don’t know. As much as I love my husband, the thought of spending 115 years together in a cage does seem rather daunting; I’m not sure I could do it either. But I’d probably stop short of actually taking a bite out of him.
