10 Hip Baby Names from the Bible

Expectant moms and dads and grandmothers and aunts and cousins and just about everyone in the family often search far and wide for baby names. (Unless your thing is sticking to family names, and that’s cool in its own right.)

There are blogs, books, magazines (Hello, Matilda Magazine!), and message boards. You name it the sources are endless. One of the oldest sources is the Bible. And while using Biblical names is nothing new, there are some really hip ones that seem to get overlooked generation after generation.

If you like the idea of a Biblical name but don’t want your son to be among 8 Noahs in his class, or if you’re just tired of overused baby names in general, check out these 10 hip baby names from the Bible!

  • Abra 6 of 11
Hip Baby Names from the Bible

I was surprised when I first discovered this name by how much I like it (I'm pronouncing it with soft sounds: ah-brah, not A-brah). It's an off-path way to get to the popular nickname, Abby. According to Nameberry, "Abra was a favorite of King Solomon and it was a popular name in seventeenth century England."

  • Lucius 7 of 11
Hip Baby Names from the Bible

Lucius is a great name for a boy. It appears three times in the Bible as the name of three separate men, so it has certainly enjoyed popularity. It's uncommon without being ridiculous.

  • Persis 8 of 11
Hip Baby Names from the Bible

I'd add this girl name to my short list in a heartbeat if my last name didn't end in -s (first names ending in -s paired with a last name ending in -s sound far too hissy to me!). But I just love this New Testament name.

  • Jabez 9 of 11
Hip Baby Names from the Bible

This is another super hip boy name to consider, and for all the reasons Nameberry points out: It has a "a rare combo of three appealing elements: a Biblical heritage, a captivating Southern accent, and a jazzy feel. It was popular with the Pilgrims and on into the nineteenth century (there have been four U.S. Congressmen named Jabez), but it hasn't been in the Top 1000 since 1880."

  • Mahlah 10 of 11
Hip Baby Names from the Bible

I wonder if anyone has ever thought to use this name spelled Mahla. Surely, Mala has been used. Why not Mahlah? I'm kind of digging the two Hs. Mahlah, in the Bible, was one of five sisters.
