10 Things I Can't Live Without in the Third Trimester

In some ways, this pregnancy has felt like a lifetime, in others, it feels like a flash. I cannot believe that I’m already into my third trimester and that baby showers and birth classes are rapidly approaching. Where did the time go? And why isn’t the third trimester nearly as gentle as the second?

Several long months ago I wrote about the items I couldn’t live without in the first trimester and while I sort of missed updating the list during the second trimester, I’ve found that a lot of my likes, dislikes and necessities have changed since then. Yes, I said necessities. Bagels can totally be necessities.

And the best part is that the vast majority of my must have items are inexpensive and readily available. I know there are all kinds of fancy and expensive things out there that women swear by, but that’s just not my style.

    1. Old Navy Maternity Yoga Pants
A friend of mine recommended these to me early in pregnancy and I kind of forgot about them until around Christmas when I had a gift card and decided to buy myself a pair. I could live in these pants. The don't press on my belly, they are the right length and the material is wonderfully soft. My only regret is that I cannot wear them to work.

    2. Reusable Water Bottle
Water has always been my go to beverage, but I'm finding that letting myself get even the tiniest bit dehydrated results in an onslaught of Braxton Hicks contractions. So I'm now ultra diligent about my water drinking throughout the day, and without a water bottle I'd a) be lost and b) be paying a ton for my water habit. These are my favorite water bottles because the mouth stays covered (germs!) and they fit in my cup holders!

Hi, welcome to the TMI slide. Between the increase in, ahem, discharge and the precarious battle between me and the baby over who controls my bladder, I would be a nervous wreck without them. If you don't need these in late pregnancy, well, then I might hate you a little bit.

    4. Cranberry Juice
I'm actually pretty impressed that I made it all the way to 28 weeks without a UTI since they have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I've been trying to up my cranberry juice intake to help keep them away and hopefully won't have to visit Labor and Delivery or the pharmacy again anytime soon.

    5. Satsuma Body Polish
My sister introduced this to me a few months ago and I have recently become addicted. It has a powerful smell in the shower, but only lingers very lightly afterwards. I can't handle strong smells all day long, so this is a nice compromise. Plus, it's helped get rid of the ridiculous amounts of dry skin I've been living with for the past 7 months.

    6. Cinnamon Crunch Bagels from Panera Bread
I'm not even going to pretend like there's a reasonable justification for these. I just love them and crave cinnamon desperately. Also, don't ask me how I know this, but they freeze really well. Just pop a frozen one in the microwave for 20 seconds before tossing in the toaster (unless you have a very fancy toaster). Seriously, they're delicious.

  • 7. Unisom 7 of 10
    7. Unisom
Now, I say this with a HUGE disclaimer: my doctor knows I'm on it and okayed it, please check with your doctor before taking anything, especially since not all varieties of Unisom are safe during pregnancy. That said, sleep has been almost impossible to come by and a half of a tablet each night has helped pretty tremendously.

    8. Slip On (supportive) Shoes
I wish you could hear me try to put my shoes on. The sheer volume of grunting that takes place is laughable. Which is why I'm now firmly in slip on shoe territory. I'll admit that this is one place I'm willing to splurge, especially since a big part of my work day is spent on my feet. My favorite work shoes are these clogs by Dansko, and on the weekends, it's all about the flip flops. Someday I'll be able to reach my feet again, right?

    9. Calcium Chews
The third trimester is when your body does a huge Calcium transfer to the baby. I can't recall the exact amounts, but your baby needs the Calcium and so do you. These are not so delicious I'd eat them for fun, but they're the most tolerable/palatable calcium supplement I've found to date.

  • 10. Body Pillow 10 of 10
    10. Body Pillow
I've written about this before, but I can't say it enough. If you have hip pain at night the way I have, get yourself a body pillow. It hasn't cured my pain by any means, but it has significantly reduced it. And it cost me a whopping $5.99. I'm sure the $50 ones are great, but this one totally does the job. One night without it is more than enough proof for me.
