One of the quickest lessons I learned during wedding planning was that anything with the word “wedding” attached automatically had an inflated price tag. Now two-ish years later, I’m seeing that trend once again with all things baby-related. And perhaps the biggest over-priced market of all exists in the maternity stores.
Your stomach is growing. Your clothes don’t fit. You have NO choice but to plunk down your credit card and pay big bucks for things as simple as stretchy bands of fabric to hold your pants up.
If you’re like me, you try to get by with as little “real” maternity gear as possible. While I have still had to buy new clothes to accommodate my new size and shape, I’ve tried to shop in mainstream stores and look for flattering styles like maxi dresses or tunic tops – things that can be worn again after pregnancy, and that won’t be quite so marked up in price.
But at 25 weeks now, I’ve also learned that there are few maternity pieces well worth the investment. These items have made a huge difference for me in feeling comfortable and confident throughout my pregnancy…
A Fitted Cami 1 of 5I got mine at Target and wear it under almost everything. I find that having something tight and fitted on underneath my shirts makes me feel more supported and comfortable as my bump gets bigger.
A Good Pair of Jeans 2 of 5I splurged and got a pair of Joe's maternity jeans from A Pea in the Pod, and I can say with full certainty that they were worth every penny. I wear them almost every day, and having a pair of jeans that is comfortable and makes me feel good is priceless. There are a range of price options available at stores like Old Navy, Target, and Gap! The full panel styles will also last well into the 2nd and (hopefully) 3rd trimesters!
One Nice Dress 3 of 5No matter what season you are pregnant, it's unlikely that you'll get through nine (ten!) months without an invitation to a wedding, party, graduation, or other formal event. Having one nice dress to wear for all of these helps to make you feel pretty in any stage of pregnancy.
Comfortable Lounge Pants 4 of 5I think my husband's greatest fear for my pregnancy was that I would literally spend nine months in sweatpants. Even though I do actually get dressed every day, it's really nice to have some comfortable lounge wear to put on in the evenings when my back is hurting and my feet are ready to be propped up. I snagged a pair of maternity lounge pants on sale at A Pea in the Pod, and I wear them almost every night!
A Zip Hoodie 5 of 5Even when you are pregnant in the summer, there are always going to be times when the air conditioning is too high or a restaurant is too cold. After weeks of struggling to zip things over my bump, I finally got a maternity sweatshirt with extra fabric designed to work with my new frame. It doubles as lounge wear at home, and it's nice to have something to throw on if I'm heading out somewhere cool!
What can you add to this list? What are your maternity must-haves?
