5 Maternity Pieces Worth Buying

By EmilyBMalone |

A good pair of jeans makes nine months much more comfortable!

One of the quickest lessons I learned during wedding planning was that anything with the word “wedding” attached automatically had an inflated price tag.  Now two-ish years later, I’m seeing that trend once again with all things baby-related.  And perhaps the biggest over-priced market of all exists in the maternity stores.

Your stomach is growing.  Your clothes don’t fit.  You have NO choice but to plunk down your credit card and pay big bucks for things as simple as stretchy bands of fabric to hold your pants up.

If you’re like me, you try to get by with as little “real” maternity gear as possible.  While I have still had to buy new clothes to accommodate my new size and shape, I’ve tried to shop in mainstream stores and look for flattering styles like maxi dresses or tunic tops – things that can be worn again after pregnancy, and that won’t be quite so marked up in price.

But at 25 weeks now, I’ve also learned that there are few maternity pieces well worth the investment.  These items have made a huge difference for me in feeling comfortable and confident throughout my pregnancy…

Five Maternity Pieces Worth the Investment

A Fitted Cami

I got mine at Target and wear it under almost everything. I find that having something tight and fitted on underneath my shirts makes me feel more supported and comfortable as my bump gets bigger.

What can you add to this list?  What are your maternity must-haves?

I guess as with anything else that has to do with pregnancy – everybody is different! While I did have to buy some work appropriate dresses, I haven’t (and won’t) need a formal dress. I did attend a formal party, but it was so early in my pregnancy I could wear normal clothes. Otherwise, with 6 weeks left to go, I only have 2 of your 5 (pregnancy jeans and fitted camis). At this point in my pregnancy, I am SO glad I got some long maternity tshirts because some of my maternity shirts are even too short to cover my belly. I find that crazy, but I’m really carrying all in my belly and straight out front. I know everyone carries differently so that may not be the case for others!

I have actually found that most maternity clothes are reasonably priced. I found some cute dresses, basic t-shirts, and cami’s at Target that I’m getting a lot of use out of. I also found some nice pieces at Motherhood Maternity. My biggest frustration is that I’ve only got a handful of outfits so I basically wear the same things every week. I’m 7 months and still have the rest of the summer to get through and I’m thinking of investing a bit in a couple maxi dresses that I can wear to work or can dress up for more formal parties. I’ve got two weddings that both fall on my due date! Not sure if I’ll actually make it to either one though.

I loved my Bella Band! It was great for keeping my pre-preggo jeans from falling down, then for support. Even great for postpartum. Target has a similar one, and it’s cheaper.

These are some great maternity pieces, but I must add one piece that should be in every preggo’s closet! It’s called the Bashful Bump Maternity Bodysuit. They come in several different styles and you NEVER have to worry about showing your backside again. They can also be worn for a few months postpartum. Check them out at They are sold in stores now too, so be sure to check the “store finder” to find a store near you. You won’t be disappointed!!

I found I could re-purpose a lot of my clothes so that was helpful. But having a really good couple of tops was the key eg

I could then mix them with pants, skirts etc. And scarves and accessories. They’ll brighten up any outfit.
