A Birth Kit for a Home Birth

Yesterday I tweeted and posted on Facebook about how I was excited my birth kit had arrived so quickly and I was flooded with questions and comments. “What’s a birth kit?” “There’s a kit for that?” “How does a birth kit work?” “I didn’t know you had to order your own supplies!”

So here’s a homebirth kit demystified!

I ordered mine from In His Hands and our midwife has a customized kit on file with them. I just find the name of the clinic’s head midwife and order the kit she likes to have on hand. Our birth kit includes many of the consumable items you’d expect to find at a birth – pads, tape measure for the baby, gloves, alcohol pads and testing kits for the blood typing and PKU heel stick, etc. It only costs $55 for the entire thing. (You get an idea of the price inflation at most hospitals!)

I ordered mine Monday evening and it was at my door on Wednesday. Now that’s service!

It also means that Vivian can make her appearance whenever she wants. I’m past the 37 week mark. I’m back within normal ranges on my iron levels. And most of all – I’m physically ready to have this baby. And…my birth kit is here. Bring it on!
