A Different Kind of Father's Day & My Top 10 Celebrity Dads [Videos]

When I was just a wee lass, the guy I called Dad was at best a gregarious sort and at worst, a harsh man with anger management issues to say the least. That was when I was little. He wasn’t around for very long although my sister and I continued to have visits with him and his new wife here and there (when he was on his, ‘best behavior’). I can say I think back on those days with discomfort, (that we were sent to be with him) now that I have a ‘grown-up’ protective momma bear’s perspective. Especially being pregnant. Rawr.

Roll forward to my teens: well, it turns out that guy was not my ‘real’ dad after all. A major hit to my fresh brain and soul to say the least. Who was my dad? What did he look like? Why did he leave and WHAT THE HELL, my life is one big fat lie. Those are questions I kept wrapped up inside and acted out in various rebellious, self-destructive ways. Perhaps this isn’t the sort of warm and fuzzy y’all (yes, I’m Canadian and I say y’all), are looking to read about regarding Father’s Day, but I’m pretty sure I represent a large demographic of people with a similar, if not relatable, story.

Present day: I share a step-father with my beautiful younger sister who for my time with him, possessed similar traits to the afore-mentioned man-of-the-hour. Years of counseling and personal work later; he is and has been the great sort of dad every girl should have. Solace. For my sis.

Lessons for today? Probably some that you wouldn’t want a young child, or teen, to ever have to learn. Of such consequence, there is beauty, there is good. I am now loved by, witness to and experience every single day, the type of father that I dreamed about for myself and my future children. Distinct above all else, he has slowly taught me to trust again, to believe in family and leave my fears in the past. Oh, but the sight of my young lad and his dad together do the most shmaltzy, tender things to this tough soul. A good mix to possess, I think.

Yesterday was epic. Some might say (with the help of some throw-down pals), I went overboard with the feast and what-not, I say bah. (Even though my pregnant body felt like it hated me at the end of it, and my feet swelled up like tater-tots). Damn, but it felt good to honour having at last, what I had only dreamt about. So it was me and the boob-tube for some fatherly figure filler. T.V. dads were my idols back in the day, some very fine one’s indeed. What/Who were yours?
