A new research study shows that 7 – 8 month old babies will actively seek out toys and games that are ‘just right’ for their educational needs; they are turned off by toys that are too boring and simple or too complex and advanced.

The study followed the infant’s eye movements as the baby watched a pattern appear on screen. Predictable, slow patterns caused the babies to lose interest; patterns that were too fast and advanced also caused a drop in interest.
The study suggests that infants are much more actively engaged in seeking out information from the world than previously thought, Ms. [Celeste] Kidd, [the study's lead author] said. And that means that they do not need fancy toys to learn, she said. A reasonably stimulating environment provides rich possibilities.
I really love this website for interactive (and cheap) ways to entertain little ones – Games to Play With Babies, which is organized by development stage. When your baby is little, the best toy really is YOU!
