Today brings the start of my new role here blogging at Babble! I am so excited to share my journey through pregnancy with you, while learning valuable and useful tips from the experienced moms and Babble veterans. After a little over a year of trying, my husband, Casey, and I found out in late January that we were finally expecting a baby this coming October! Our bundle of joy isn’t even here yet, and already life has changed so much. (I’m sure I will laugh that I thought life had changed come October…)
Change seems to be the theme of my late-twenties, as my life today is virtually unrecognizable from what it was just a few years back. Five years ago I was overweight, inactive, living in Ohio, working at a desk doing non-profit fundraising, and partying my weekends away. After weeks, months, and years of excuses, I finally gave myself the kick in the pants that I needed to make some major life changes.
I started by walking – anything to get myself out being active, and on the road to losing weight. Eventually, walking became running, and I’ve since run five full marathons. Along the way, I fell in love with food and healthy cooking, and overhauled my diet to help me lose (and keep off!) 30+ pounds. But I didn’t stop there – the journey continued to grow and evolve the more I learned about health and nutrition. I became a vegetarian. I quit drinking. And finally, with the support and encouragement of Casey, I held my breath and made another huge change. I quit my job and enrolled in culinary school. Today, my kitchen proudly displays my diploma in Culinary Arts!
Since graduating, I have transitioned into a full-time career writing my website Daily Garnish, in addition to doing recipe development and food writing for publications such as SELF and O magazines. I feel lucky each and every day that I found the strength to follow my dream, and all the opportunities that I have been granted since.
Going back to school, graduating, and changing the course of my career took us from Ohio to North Carolina, over to the DC area, and finally out to Seattle, Washington. Four states in two years has been plenty for me, and I have no plans to fill any moving boxes again any time soon (famous words…). And now another big change is on the horizon – a BABY!
For years our weekends have been filled with local road races, endless hours of cooking in the kitchen, and biking along our favorite trails. Now I find they seem to be taken up with trips to Babies R Us, browsing strollers online, and long walks to discuss important topics like who is in charge of potty training our little boy. I am so excited to continue to share my journey through my first pregnancy with you all, and look forward to Babbling my many thoughts and questions along the way. Because of all the twists and turns my life has taken recently, nothing has been quite as challenging or rewarding as…Being Pregnant.
