Being Sick While Pregnant SucksLauren Hartmann
I have an immune system of steel. I rarely get sick, because I work with 15 little petrie dishes of germs (AKA “preschoolers”) everyday. But, building up one’s immunity by being coughed and sneezed on daily does come with an illness here or there and unluckily for me my first sick day this year decided to come AFTER I was pregnant instead of before.
Seriously…how did I make it through all the winter months, illness free, only to get the sorest throat of my life in July?? Thankfully Portland, Oregon hasn’t had the heat wave that the rest of the country has dealt with, but still…being sick while pregnant sucks. Not only do I feel worn down from being sick, but it’s on top of already feeling worn down in general. Creating a life form is hard work!
Under normal (read: non-pregnant) circumstances I would simply chug a bit of Nyquil to get me through the night and load up on cold meds during the day, but pregnancy does not provide me with that luxury. Oh how I miss you Nyquil and the “best-sleep-I-ever-got-with-a-cold” that you provided me! So now I’m left to figure out just what I can do to help this sore throat, viral, awfulness go away.
I thought I might’ve had strep, but after getting a strep test today that was ruled out, so I guess it’s just a good old fashioned virus. So far I’ve gargled with salt water, but now I’m out of ideas. I know I can take Tylenol, but I’d rather not be popping pills all day, Tylenol or not. And some tea with honey sounds nice, but I can’t seem to get a straight answer about whether or not honey is ok to eat while pregnant.
Do you guys have any suggestions for what to do to help a sore throat naturally? Do you know of anything that I should avoid that might make it worse? What helps you when your sick while pregnant? HELP!! …Please! And thank you in advance.
