Best Maternity Bras 2011

By michellehorton |

Finding the perfect maternity/nursing bras can feel overwhelming, especially when you have no idea how big and heavy your breasts will get after your milk comes in.

I recently compiled this year’s Babble Best Maternity Bras feature, in which I consulted with a team of new and seasoned moms (who so graciously tested bras), as well as a maternity bra expert who has spent countless hours fitting all sizes and shapes.

The biggest tips are:

  1. Don’t over-invest in nursing bras during your pregnancy. There’s no way to tell how your breasts will grow and change after your milk comes in.
  2. Buy a good starter nursing bra and nursing tank that will fit during the engorgement period.
  3. When you’re ready to buy a collection of nursing bras, get professionally fitted by a local expert.

(We can’t stress #3 enough! These are new, heavier breasts for you, and a properly fitted bra is more important than ever.)

Take a look at our favorites of the year, including our recommendations on which bras you should buy during pregnancy:

Best Starter: Galmourmom Starter Nursing Bra, $39

This one was unanimously recommended from every single tester, and praised by our expert. And this is one you can buy during your pregnancy for those beginning postpartum days.

While I’m sure most of these bras are great, many of them don’t come in odd sizes. I wear a 32F, and while You! Lingerie, Nummies, and HotMilk come in my size (in a very few styles) many of these bras, even the ones that say they come in sizes to fit “any shape” don’t come in my size. However, I will say that I love the HotMilk bras in terms of style, support, and adjustability (they have 6 sets of hooks to adjust band size.) The Nummies everyday bras are super-comfortable, supportive, and just stretchy enough to accomadate fluctuations in breast size throughout the day.

@Heather: Larger sizes (E and up) are going to be harder to find, but a professional bra fitter should help you. You’ll need more support than smaller busted moms, and there are several picks in the main Babble Best Maternity Bras feature that are specifically good for larger busts — specifically Elomi, Cake, and Glamourmom’s Large Bust Tank.
