Those pesky sibling rivalries. We’ve all heard of them. Some of us have even lived them. And what brother hasn’t been envious of the sister who’s getting all the attention just because she’s about to give birth to a measly baby who will be armed with Grandma’s maiden name? Hmm?
Well, okay, that’s never happened to me. Nor, I suspect, has it happened to most of you. But even if it were to happen, how cruel do you have to be to steal from your sister while she’s experiencing one of the most defining moments she’ll ever experience?
If you’re dying to know the answer to that question, then I suppose you’ll have to ask Steven William John Jones. Because the 25-year-old has just been sentenced to three years in jail for stealing from his own sister.
The sister, Shelley Jones, was in the hospital and about to give birth at the end of January. Her partner, Richard Allen, was going back and forth between the house they shared and the hospital. On the night of January 28, Allen invited Shelley Jones’ brother over to spend the night.
The next morning, the men left the residence at the same time. Allen went to the hospital, but Steven Jones apparently pulled a u-turn. Because he returned to the residence just 30 minutes later and stole some cash, two XBox consoles (along with some games), a watch, a bracelet and (get this) some of the baby’s toys. Jones gained admission to the residence with a set of spare keys he had lifted from the flat.
As if pregnancy and giving birth weren’t hard enough, Shelley Jones now had that garbage to deal with.
According to a story in WalesOnline, Judge John Curran had the following to say to Jones during sentencing: “This was a particularly mean breach of trust and a very poor reward for generosity.”
I should say so. What’s the worst breach of trust you’ve heard of when it comes to pregnancy?
