Céline Dion is pregnant with twins. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Céline has owned up to some of the hard parts about her pregnancy. It’s so rare for a pregnant celebrity to admit anything but wholehearted glee about the experience. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you pregnant people that pregnancy can sometimes be less than gleeful.
Céline Dion’s pregnancy comes after a long, rough road, including a miscarriage and five failed IVF attempts. People sometimes think that when a woman has worked so extraordinarily hard to get pregnant, she’ll be that much more likely to enjoy and appreciate the experience. While this may be true on some (very important) levels, it’s also true that pregnancy after infertility can sometimes be subject to complicated feelings. Depression and anxiety are especially common in pregnancies achieved via fertility treatments. The pressure and fear can be incredibly intense after a long time of trying, particularly for women who are up against a loudly ticking biological clock.
It’s not exactly news that fertility treatments and early pregnancy are “physically and emotionally exhausting” as Céline acknowledges in her interview. (In fact, on closer reading, it’s hard to tell exactly what she’s exhausted about, the IVF attempts, the pregnancy, or both.) In any case, it’s refreshing to hear that complex emotions can come up in a celebrity pregnancy, too. I’m sure this happens way more than we know about, but I am sort of impressed with Céline Dion for admitting that getting pregnant and being pregnant can both be very hard work.
