We’ve all heard of the babymoon, when you and your partner go away before the baby comes. Well, I wanted to do something similar with my oldest, Sylvie. She will be 7 when this baby comes and it was important to me (and her!) that we get in some special time before Atticus is here. With all the crazy scheduling and soccer games, we were only able to sneak away for one night, but it was a girls night full of fun! Due to my back issues and how far along I am, the trip had to be within two hour driving distance. However, living in Los Angeles we had plenty of options. Sylvie is a nature and animal lover so I knew when given the choice, it would involve one or both of those. When I asked her she immediately said, “We HAVE to go to the Santa Barbara Zoo, Mommy!!!”
Crap, how was I going to be able to walk around a zoo with my back out? As it turns out, they have electric scooters you can rent for the day and that saved the day! Perhaps it ruined my kid’s ego, but she got over it and we had a blast on our overnight excursion. Check out all of our fun and get some ideas for your own older sibling Babymoon…
We left early Friday afternoon, right after school and took the scenic Pacific Coast Highway so we could see the ocean and have a more enjoyable drive. I only got two “When are we going to get there?” comments, which is huge! We played lots of games in the car like I spy, spell words with license plate letters, make up the silliest stories, and Sylvie taking self portraits with my phone. When I booked the hotel, I opted for a cottage-style bed and breakfast. Not only was this a fun and special place to stay, it also saved a lot of money. Santa Barbara is not cheap, but a B & B turned out to be significantly less than your usual and they served breakfast!
We arrived and settled in to our cottage in the garden and made plans for dinner. Sylvie chose Mexican, which was perfect for what Santa Barbara has to offer. We found a great little spot just off the main drag and had ourselves a fancy supper with guacamole made at the table (Side note: Kids LOVE this.), virgin margaritas (Made her feel the dinner was super special!), and delicious food. Then we headed back for a night in with a movie we stopped to get popcorn and some treats. (The B & B offered a late night snack of brownies!) We stayed up way past her bedtime of 8 PM and fell asleep together. She felt so grown-up getting to go to bed at the same time as Mom.
We woke up and had a lovely breakfast in the garden and headed out to one of our favorite places, the Santa Barbara Zoo! We had so much fun, learned about new species, bought a stuffed animal American Bald Eagle (Sophie’s new obsession!), and had a scooter/running race.
On our way home, we stopped for a treat of frozen yogurt, arrived to find our preordered My Prudent Advice was delivered while we were away, and got lots of hugs from the boys! It was the perfect night away for us girls to bond and have some extra special just us time before the craziness of a newborn. Check out our photos!
