An investigation is underway after a woman, pregnant with twin boys, chose to have one aborted because of a defect and doctors aborted the wrong baby.
As the Huffington Post reports, the mother, who lives in Australia, opted to abort the one baby because he had a life-threatening congenital heart defect that would require years of operations – if he survived at all. However, doctors accidentally aborted a healthy 32-week fetus by injecting the healthy twin instead.
Because of the doctor’s mistake, the woman had to undergo a three-hour emergency c-section to deliver the sick fetus which was later “terminated.” A family friend tells the Mirror, “She went to the hospital with two babies and now she has none. And she had the heartache of giving birth to her sick baby. She’s traumatised.
The Royal Women’s Hospital has confirmed the mistake calling it a “terrible tragedy” and says they are “conducting a full investigation and continue to offer the family and affected staff every support.”
Additionally, Australia’s Health Minister David Davis has promised a full investigation to find out what happened. “I am very much determined to get to the bottom of what went wrong,” he said. The Mirror reports the family is said to be taking separate legal action.
