Drink Up Momma—Testing for Gestational Diabetes Part 2
Last Tuesday I headed over to the lab to take my one hour glucose test to check for gestational diabetes. There is something about that test that makes it one of my least favorite of all prenatal tests so as I left the lab I crossed my fingers in hope that my numbers would be low enough to not have to take the three hour test.
I needed to score a 130 or lower.
On Friday I received a phone call from my OB-GYN’s office. My score was 148.
I failed the test.
So now I get to go take the three hour test this week. The test that requires me to fast for 10 hours prior to stepping foot in the lab. The test where I get to sit in the lab for three hours and have blood drawn once every hour after drinking another one of those awful 10 ounce containers of sugar water. The test that left me nauseous and famished by the time I finished it when I was pregnant with my first son.
Needless to say I’m not looking forward to this test.

That sounds terrible. I knew you weren’t wanting that test. Maybe you can keep a snack in your purse. Like a Twinkie. It’s ok to eat a Twinkie after you give blood, right?
Ok, maybe a banana would be better.
My levels were the same as yours- 148! And remember, I couldn’t do the 3 hour test. (Enjoying those 4 daily pricks now.) Levels aren’t looking good- seriously high an hour after meals, but I am eating like I normally do and not eating a diabetic diet- I was told not to YET because we are seeing my regular behavior.
I REALLY hope you “pass” the 3 hour test!!!
“Good news” if I do have GD, I get a few more ultrasounds of baby- I would have only had the 20 week one (11 weeks ago!) being low risk and healthy.
Oh dear, I commented last week because I took my 1-hour test last wednesday and I failed too! I’m taking the dreaded 3-hour test this Thursday and I’m supposed to eat a ‘special diet’ high in carbs, fruits, and dairy for three days leading up to it. The instructions from my doctor even said to be sure to eat at least 1 dessert or candy bar a day! Its like they’re setting me up for failure, loading me up with lots of sugar all week. Good luck on your test!
I failed the 1 hour too and had an awful experience for the 3 hour. I blogged about it on Friday if you want to check it out. Luckily I don’t have to retake it

I know it sounds awful, and I had gestational diabetes with my first but not my second. It was rough the constant finger pricking, dieting while pregnant(the most unfair thing in the world). But the payoff is so worth it. I hope it doesn’t go that far for you but if it does is ends when the baby is born and you get the best gift for cooperating with all the stuff you have to do. Hang in there, good luck with the next test.
