There have been several developments with my baby in the last month cuing that he is getting ready for his grand exit from my uterus. First, he started running out of space so that I could see his limbs moving across my stomach. Then he decided he was ready to flip head-down, getting ready for delivery. And this past week? The fetal hiccups have begun.
I honestly have no memory of my other two kids getting hiccups in the womb. I’m sure it happened occasionally and I thought, “Oh, how cute!” and moved on with my day. But this baby is seriously getting them every single day, at least two or three times a day and almost always when I’m settling in to sleep for the night.
Yes, at first I thought it was adorable, especially when I’m being very still and I can see my whole midsection jump with his body as he hiccups. It happened during my checkup last week and my doctor was very encouraging–“He’s getting those lungs ready….!” my OB said with a smile.
But now I just kinda wish he’d cut it out, especially when I’m trying to sleep. Sigh. I guess this is just the first of many times he will do his thing regardless of whether Mommy would like to get some rest!
